Welcome and thank you for visiting our website. We are thrilled to send surplus theological books to theological libraries in the majority world. Most of our books have been donated by theologians, academics, retired ministers, or theological libraries hence they are second-hand books. Occasionally we have some new publications. We only send books that are selected by librarians or tutors in need so that our distribution is sustainable and ethical in fostering theological education and research equality.

방문해 주셔서 감사합니다. 저희 단체는 전 세계에 있는 도서관, 또는 앞으로 세워질 예정인 신학 도서관이나 기독교 대학에 영어 신학 학술서를 무료로 제공하는 것에 뜻을 두고 세워진 단체입니다. 신학 학자나 교수님, 신학 도서관등에서 기증받은 도서들 다루기 때문에 새 책보다는 헌 책이 주를 이룹니다. 그러나 간혹 출판사나 그와 관련되 곳에서 새 책을 기증받기도 합니다. 후원받는 도서관의 사서분이 선정한 꼭 필요한 신학책을 보내는 맞춤 기부를 제공함으로써 신학교육과 연구의 평등성을 지향하고 윤리적이고 지속가능한 배송과 도서활용을 추구합니다.
Mission 사역
In an era where access to information is paramount, the global imbalance in theology resources is widening. Many majority world theological libraries face challenges in acquiring their collections, but in the Western world, theological collections are surplus due to library closures, mergers, space limitations, or downsizing. We focus on the strategic and ethical distribution of surplus books to theological libraries in the majority world by providing book lists to libraries in need and only sending selected items in order to make a positive and sustainable impact. Or we curate the books by request from the recipient libraries after consultation especially when the volume of book donation is too large.

현재 영국내에선 많은 신학교와 대학들이 경제적이거나 실질적인 다양한 여러가지 이유로 도서관을 축소하거나 통폐합, 심지어 폐관하면서 산출된 엄청난 양의 신학책들이 갈 곳을 잃은 현상이 벌어지고 있습니다. 또한 은퇴하시는 많은 신학 학자분들이나 교육자, 종교인들이 양질을 신학책들을 어떻게 처리할지 몰라 곤란해 하고 있기도 합니다. 이에 반해 세계 다른 곳곳에서는 많은 신학 학교와 기독교 대학들이 활발하게 설립되면서 신학 도서가 간절하게 필요한 상황입니다. 이에 신학책이 버림받은 곳과 신학책이 발견되어야 하는 곳을 연결하는 것이 이 단체의 미션입니다. 본 사업은 정말 필요한 책만을 기증하는 것을 목표로 삼아 요청된 책들만을 적재적소에 선별하여 보내고 있습니다. 그리하여 눈앞에 보이는 당장의 성과만을 쫒아 불필요한 비용을 소모하는 관행을 없애고 쓸때없는 도서로 도서관 시설을 채우는 병폐를 처음부터 차단합니다.

Evangelical Mission: by supporting theological education and ministerial training to ministers and theologians through academic libraries

Equality in Knowledge Sharing of Theology and God: by strengthening existing receiving library collections or donating a sizable stock to set up a new library

Ethical and Sensitive Delivery: by only providing books requested and selected by recipients or curated by specialised librarians by request.

History 역사
In the spring of 2023, it all started with a casual conversation over lunch at work with a new visiting academic who is the head of a seminary in a country of the majority world. As a librarian, I asked a simple question about her seminary library. She highlighted the inadequacy of the library in terms of academic resources, expressing challenges in procuring theological books for academic purposes in her country. Recognising librarians are drowned by surplus books in the West, I felt compelled to take action and rectify the disparity between those with access and those without. Furthermore, who could better understand the significance of theological books than a Korean and also a librarian?
The history of Christianity in Korea is unique. Rausch and Park (2020), in their article, 'Christianity in Korea', Asian Philosophies and Religions, 25:6, discussed the important role that books, particularly theology books, and the Bible, played in Korea before missionaries came.
Koreans were first introduced to Catholicism in the early seventeenth century through books on 'Western learning'
This fact is echoed in A History of The Church in Korea by Allen Clark (1971, pp 39-40). Remarkably, the first church in Korea was founded not by missionaries but by Koreans, who independently studied theology books and the Bible, as documented by Kim and Ko in ''Who brought the Gospel to Korea?'' (Christian Today, 2018).
A similar scenario unfolded at the inception of Korea's Protestantism when Robert Thomas, a Welsh missionary, handed over some copies of a Chinese New Testament to Korean passersby just before his execution in 1866 on the shore of Pyeong-Yang, without an opportunity to engage in preaching or evangelism. This marked the planting of the initial seed for the exploration of Protestantism in Korea. The distribution of this Bible led to the conversion of some individuals (Clark, pp 62-63). Subsequently, the Korean Bible was clandestinely smuggled into Korea, sowing another seed.
While there were attempts by Protestant missionaries to enter Korea in 1832 and 1866, sustained contact and conversion would not occur until the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Koreans abroad in Manchuria came into contact with Protestantism through Scottish missionaries, such as John Ross (1842-1910), and smuggled Korean translations of the Gospels and then the entire New Testament into Korea before the first resident missionary, Methodist Horace Allen (1858-1932).
The theology books and Bible were prepared well in advance of missionaries arriving on the Korean peninsular. Presently, South Korea stands firmly rooted in Christianity, exemplifying its robust foundation by emerging as the second-largest sender of missionaries globally (Moll, 'Missions Incredible', Christianity Today, 2006). This stands as a testament to the profound impact of the Gospel and the Word.
Also in the autumn of 2023, I met the librarian from the Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary at the BETH (European Theological Libraries Association) conference and heard his desperate appeal.
Fully recognising the transformative influence of the Word, I feel a strong urge to forge connections between surplus books in the UK seeking new homes and simultaneously, libraries of the flourishing growth of theological training centres, seminaries, colleges, and universities in the majority world, all in dire need of theological books. Delving into library and church networks, I embarked on a journey to explore ways to support libraries in need.

2023년 봄 제가 재직중인 학교로 연구 방문차 오신 한 신학 대학 학장님과의 소소한 대화에서 우연히 그 대학 도서관에 얼마나 신학책이 절실하게 필요한가를 알게 되었습니다. 그 대학이 있는 나라에서는 기독교가 환영받지 못하고 신학 학술서를 사고 파는 것을 매우 엄격하게 제재를 받기 때문에 도서관들이 제대로 된 신학 학술서를 구비해 놓을 수가 없다고 합니다. 그에 반면 영국에서는 많은 신학 도서관들이 규모를 축소하거나 통폐합되면서 많은 신학 학술서들이 갈 곳을 잃거나 버려지고 있는 형편입니다. 이런 상황을 지켜보면서 한 곳에서는 버려지는 책들이 다른 곳에서는 발견되어 쓰이게 된다면 어떨까하는 마음을 갖게 되었습니다. 사실 신학도서의 책의 중요성을 한국인이면서 도서관 사서인 제 자신이 먼저 알지 못한다면 그 누가 알겠습니까?
한국에 그리스도교가 들어온 역사는 유일무이 특히 합니다. 로쉬와 박의 아시아 철학과 종교라는 저널에 실린 한국에서의 그리스도교라는 논문에 따르면 한국의 경우는 선교사들이 들어오기 전이 이미 보급된 책 특히 신학도서와 성경이 선교에 얼마나 중요한 역할을 했는지 보여줍니다.
한국인들에게 처음으로 가톨릭 신앙이 소개된 것은 17세기 초에 '서양 학문'에 관한 책을 통해서였습니다.
이러한 사실은 알란 클라크의 한국 교회의 역사라는 책에서도 되풀이 됩니다. 놀랍게도 한국에 세워진 첫 교회는 선교사들에 의해서가 아니라 한국인들에 의해서 였습니다. 이것은 성경과 신학도서를 스스로 공부 연구해서라고 크리스칸 투데이에 실린 누가 신약을 한국에 갖고 왔는가라는 논문에도 잘 나타납니다.
개신교에도 역시 마찬가지 입니다. 로보트 토마스 선교사가 웨일즈에서 한국으로 와서 평양땅에 닿자마자 제대로 된 선교다운 선교도 못해보고 순교하시고 말았는데 그러나 순교 직전 나눠 준 중국어로 된 성경을 통해 사람들이 스스로 기독교를 믿기 시작합니다. 이 것이 첫 믿음의 씨앗이었고 그리고 두번째 씨앗은 존 로스 목사가 번역한 한글판 신약성경을 통해서 입니다. 이 역시 감리교 호르스 알란이 한국에 선교사로 들어오기 전에 벌어진 일입니다.
선교사들이 한국땅을 밟기도 전에 신학책과 성경이 이미 믿음의 길을 잘 준비해 놓은 것입니다. 현재 한국에서는 기독교에 굳건히 뿌리를 내려서 세계에서 2번째로 많은 선교사를 보내는 나라가 되었습니다. 이것은 성경말씀과 가르침 그 자체가 얼마나 큰 힘을 갖고 있는지 극명하게 보여주는 예입니다.
2023년 가을에 저는 우클라이나 복음 신학 학교 도서관 관장을 만나서 심지어 전쟁중인데도 불구하고 건립 역사상 최고의 졸업생수, 총 190여명을 배출했다는 소식을 들었습니다. 그리고 그 도서관에 영어로 된 신학책이 필요하다는 말도 들었습니다. 그래서 옥스포드에서 남아 도는 신학책들을 우클라이나 복음 신학 학교로 보내는 사업을 시작하였습니다.
안전상의 이유로 나라의 이름을 밝힐수 없는 신학교의 학장님과 우클라이나의 도서관 관장님과의 두 만남이 발화점이 되어 결국 이 단체를 세우게 되었습니다. 영국에서 남아도는 신학 학술서를 모자라고 필요로 하는 다른 나라의 신학 도서관으로 보내서 주님이 하시는 놀라운 사업에 동참하고자 합니다. 선교사님들이 들어가기 전에 이미 한국에 신학도서가 먼저 배포됨으로써 사람들을 미리 준비시켜 성령의 강력한 임재하는 일어나는 엄청난 신앙의 역사가 이루어졌듯이 다른 나라 다른 곳에서도 옥스포드의 신학책들이 들어 가서 뜨거운 성령의 힘으로 하느님의 뜻을 많은 사람이 더욱 심오하고 명료하게 알고 믿음을 키우게 되기를 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다.
