Since 2006, Pastor Song Woo-seok has been visiting Kenya annually to collaborate with local missionaries on campus evangelism and outreach to underserved villages. Particularly from 2009 to 2015, he facilitated the support for 13 British theology professors to teach at local theological schools in Kenya, enabling them to serve the community. While conducting collaborative missionary work in Kenya, news of South Sudan's independence on July 9, 2011, prompted Pastor Song to realize the country's crucial geopolitical significance in opposition to Islamic Sudan. Consequently, he decided to relocate the ministry to South Sudan.
South Sudan emerged as an independent nation after decades of struggle for religious freedom, primarily led by Christians in the south of Sudan, resulting in millions of casualties during a 50-year-long war against Islamic forces since 1955. Under UN mediation, a ceasefire was achieved in 2005, and through a national referendum in 2011, the country finally gained independence on July 9, recognized as a sovereign state by the UN.
After exploring South Sudan two years post-independence in 2013, Pastor Song initiated prayers seeking God's plan and guidance for the nation. As stability improved since 2016, he commenced offering theological courses tailored for South Sudanese pastors in 2017, which laid the foundation for Bethel Theological School.
송우석 목사는 2006년부터 매년 케냐에 방문하여 현지 선교사와 함께 캠퍼스 복음화와 부족 마을 선교를 협력해왔었습니다, 특히 2009년부터 2015년에는 영국의 신학교 교수들을 케냐 현지 신학교에서 강의할 수 있도록 지원하는 사역을 통해 13명의 교수들을 송파하여 케냐 현지 신학교를 섬기게 하였습니다. 케냐 협력 선교를 진행 하던 중 2011년 7월 9일 남수단이 독립 했다는 소식을 듣고 이 나라가 앞으로 이슬람인 수단에 맞서 지정학적으로 매우 중요한 위치에 있음을 깨닫고 사역지를 남수단으로 옮기게 됩니다.
남수단은 수단 남쪽의 그리스도인들이 중심이 되어 1955년부터 신앙의 자유를 위해 이슬람 세력과 맞서 50년간 독립 전쟁을 치려 수백만명의 희생자가 발생하였고, 2005년 UN 중재하에 휴전을 이루고 2011 년 국민들의 투표를 통해 드디어 7월 9일 UN으로부터 독립국가의 지위를 얻게 된 나라입니다.
송우석 목사는 독립 2년 후인 2013년에 남수단을 둘러본 후 이나라를 위한 하나님의 계획과 인도하심을 구하는 기도를 시작하여, 2016년 이후 나라가 많이 안정되자 2017년부터 "남수단 목회자를 위한 신학강좌"를 개설하였고, 이 신학 강좌가 벧엘 신학교의 근간이 됩니다.
